Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sambo is a martial art that was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1930’s. It was originally developed for the Red Army but became a sport.

The sport requires you to fight an opponent using throws, pins, and submissions.

The sport is split into two different styles: sport and combat. Sport involves throws, pins, and submissions. Combat is sport with punches, kicks, knees, headbutts, elbows, and chokes in addition to some point values being altered.

  • There are many reasons but I will list two:

One, this Soviet martial art has produced the finest fighters in MMA. The names speak for themselves. Khabib Nurmagomedov, Fedor Emelianenko, Islam Makhachev, Oleg Taktarov. Their success in the UFC and Belatior were from sambo.

Two, the sport is highly versatile. Our rule set gives us a lot more techniques we can use in matches. BJJ and judo both have restrictions on their techniques, such as judo not allowing leg grabs and BJJ restricting certain submissions by belts.

A BJJ athlete would have a hard time competing in judo and sambo due to the lack of throws and a judo athlete would have trouble because of the lack of leg grabs and restrictive rule set.

  • Sweatpants, a t-shirt, a bottle of water, and an attitude to learn.

  • Due to sanctions against Russia, there are two manufacturers we recommend for sambo equipment.
